The Perfect Mix

After getting a master's degree in biology from a small school, I thought it was a good idea to go to a large research university for my PhD -- one that had a very good reputation and that was involved in the biomedical sciences. Weill Cornell really offered the perfect mix of everything that I was looking for. The emphasis on translational research means a lot to me. Here, there's actually a link between bench research and putting things to use in the clinic. Our laboratory has just discovered a new protein and we believe it has potential to one day play an important role in new therapies.

World-Class Seminars and First-Rate Faculty

Scientists from all over the world come to New York to speak at seminar series hosted by Weill Cornell, Sloan-Kettering, and Rockefeller University -- and we go to all of them. The speakers are top scientists in their field, and it's very inspiring to hear their presentations. The faculty is truly outstanding. At Weill Cornell, there's a great mesh of scientific minds in one place. When I was choosing a PhD Program, one of the aspects of the graduate school that I really liked was that you had this massive cluster of top-notch research going on within a very small geographical area.  And the faculty are very accessible. You can approach any scientist if you have a question for them. The scientific community here is very open and dynamic. It's an extraordinary place to go to school.

Everything You Need at Your Fingertips

Because I came from a small school with limited research facilities, I was very impressed with the fact that, within the tri-institutional program, you basically have everything at your fingertips. We have core facilities for just about any scientific technique that you need and everything is in-house. I've found that when it's in-house, it's personal. You're not just sending things out. You're not just a PO number. The core staff guides you through the process. They're experts in the field, so you get just what you need to do your experiment.
